Imperfect Imprints
This series interrogates memory and the imprinting of life experiences in the body. I utilize cyanotyping, in which objects are laid onto a photosensitive-treated paper, canvas, or cloth and exposed to sunlight, leaving a print. The objects are everything from my own medical images to items symbolizing womanhood, life milestones, specific traumas, and the healing process.

Sacred Garden (2024). 18 x 18 x 1 in. Cyanotype prints and embroidery on wood panel.

I Am the Medicine (2024). 12 x 12 in. Cyanotype prints on wood circular panel. I found this snakeskin on a spiritual retreat, where I desperately hoped to shed my limiting beliefs. I was frustrated at how much I was clinging to these expectations but the snakeskin reminded me of the Ram Dass quote that you cannot force the snake to molt its skin. It happens at the rate it happens. Healing happens not just in beautiful settings but in every moment I give myself the space and time to let go. I am the medicine.

She perservered (2023). 12 x 12 in. Cyanotype prints on wood panel This piece speaks to trying to heal trauma that is trapped in the body, manifesting as “medically” unexplained chronic pain. The collage uses cyanotype prints of a CT scan of my head with wildflowers picked from my front yard that speaks to the resilience of the desert. Just like the sudden popping of the poppies, healing can happen in spurts after a winter of darkness. The scissors represent the hard edges created to survive, like the spines of a cactus, but inside my mind is still beautiful.

Desert Survivors (2023). 18 x 18 x 3/8 in. Cyanotype prints and acrylic on wood panel. This piece pays tribute to the resilience and fragility of the Sonoran Desert and the cyclical nature of life. During a triple digit June day in 2023, I tried to rescue a lizard barely moving on my patio with water, acknowledging the childishness and futility of this gesture.

Move Change Inhabit (2024). 16.25 x 16.25 in Collaged cyanotype prints and acrylic on wicker support. Here I recount the many moves of my life both literal and metaphorical and that while we think we are leaving a place or event behind, it never really leaves us.

American gurl (2023). 12 x 12 in. Cyanotype prints and acrylic on canvas.
